Why working at Next has been great for my midlife health

Last year, my fitness and wellbeing business slowed down. Like many in the industry, I noticed that when times are tough, people often see exercise as a luxury. Despite offering affordable options, classes at just £7 per session and a membership at £25 per month, bookings dipped.

To help smooth over the leaner weeks, I looked for a local part-time job. I wasn’t fussy, just something nearby and no more than 10 hours a week. I was lucky to land an 8.75-hour role at Next, and while it started as a temporary solution, it’s brought some surprising benefits to my midlife health!

Here’s how working at Next has supported my wellbeing:

  • Cognitive Health: Finding clothes in the stockroom, deciphering codes, and navigating the shop floor keeps my brain engaged and sharp.
  • Physical Activity: I rack up thousands of steps each shift, a fantastic boost for my cardiovascular health and mobility.
  • Social & Mental Wellbeing: Being part of a vibrant, multi-generational team adds a real sense of connection and purpose.
  • A Little Perk: A 25% discount on Next products doesn’t hurt either! 😊

Happily, business has picked up again with the success of The Great Outdoor Circuit, PlayNetball after-school coaching, and a steady stream of new personal training clients. But for now, I’ll be staying at Next, because it’s not just a job, it’s an unexpected boost to my holistic health in midlife.

So ask yourself: What small change could you make today to support your cognitive, physical, or social wellbeing?
