It’s too cold to exercise outdoors! Or is it? Read on to find out some of the benefits…

I have just returned from a weekend away with 22 Cubs and Scouts. I know this doesn’t sound relaxing but spending the majority of the time outdoors confirmed to me that I want to train more clients outside.

Perhaps Winter seems a strange time to start, with the lure of a warm house, but there are many reasons why it’s good to get outside and exercise, for both physical and mental wellbeing.

Boost Your Mood and Combat Winter Blues

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and lower energy levels often accompany shorter, darker days. Exercising outdoors provides exposure to natural light, which helps regulate your circadian rhythm and boosts serotonin levels. The combination of fresh air and physical activity can leave you feeling more positive, energized, and resilient. What’s not to like about that?

Burn More Calories

Cold temperatures cause your body to work harder to maintain a stable core temperature. This increased energy expenditure can lead to burning more calories compared to exercising in warmer conditions. Whether you’re running, walking, or cycling, winter workouts can support weight management and fitness goals, plus if you start now, you are getting ahead of all of those trying to set new year resolutions in January.

Strengthen Your Immune System

Moderate exercise in the cold can enhance your immune response. By staying active outdoors, you may reduce the frequency and severity of colds and flu. The key is to dress appropriately and avoid overexertion. As an aside, I have also added cold showers to my morning routine, which are also meant to boost immunity.

Enjoy the Beauty of Winter

Nature transforms in winter, offering serene landscapes and crisp air that can refresh your mind. Exercising in this setting promotes mindfulness and helps break the monotony of indoor routines. As I look out my window today, I am greeted by a bright blue sky, which immediately lifts me.

Top tips for exercising outdoors in the winter:

  • Dress in layers to stay warm without overheating.
  • Wear moisture-wicking fabrics to avoid dampness from sweat.
  • Start with a warm-up to prepare your muscles for the cold.

By embracing outdoor exercise in the winter, you can stay fit, boost your mood, and make the most of the season. Wrap up, step outside, and enjoy the rewards! I’m confident that you won’t regret it.
