I find myself often talking to myself as I would my clients.
Today I knew what needed doing: get my social media organised for the week, write the blog, and plan the newsletter. But after a busy morning with clients, I was struggling to get into the groove and actually sit down and think.
So what would I say to a client in that spot?
“Don’t sit there staring at a blank screen. Get moving and see if that gets the creative juices flowing.”
So that’s exactly what I did. I got up and did a bit of tidying, because there is ALWAYS tidying to do. Then I did a 5-minute full body dumbbell workout.
And it worked. By the time I sat back down, the fog had lifted and I had something to share. I also came away with a great routine that I can repeat several times a day.
Why does moving work?
When you’re stuck, sitting still and trying harder rarely helps. Moving gets your blood flowing, changes how you feel in your body, and breaks the “I can’t start” loop. It also makes starting feel smaller. You don’t have to feel motivated first. You just have to move for a few minutes, and the motivation often follows.
Your challenge for today
Next time you’re stuck, whether it’s a work task, a to-do list or a blank screen, try this:
- Stand up.
- Set a timer for two minutes.
- Tidy one small area, stretch, or just walk around the house.
Then sit back down and see how you feel. I’d love to hear how it goes.
Want the five-minute routine?
I’ve put my full body dumbbell routine together so you can do it whenever the blank screen wins. All you need is a pair of dumbbells and a few minutes.
Message me the word MOVE and I’ll send it over. It’s also part of The Feel Good October Club, along with more mini workouts, autumn recipes and wellbeing tips, all designed to be simple, feel-good and doable.
Because sometimes the best thing you can do for your head is to move your body first.
