Mindset, menopause, and a healthy persective ~ 22nd May 2025

Oh, the Joys… My Period’s Here Again!

This morning, I woke up to that all-too-familiar feeling: hello, period!

For me, day one is usually manageable, a gentle nudge that my cycle’s begun. But day two? That’s a whole different story, I’ll come back to that in a bit!

Periods Through the Years: My Journey

I’ve always considered myself quite lucky when it comes to my periods. As a teenager I had my fair share of cramps, but they eased off as I got older. For years, my period was a minor inconvenience, five days of carrying on with life as normal, no big deal.

But a few years ago, things changed.

Now, day two and day three are heavy. And I mean really heavy. We’re talking multiple nighttime wakeups, double layers of protection, and a firm “black trousers only” rule! If you know, you know.

When Tampons Just Don’t Cut It

At one point, tampons stopped being reliable for me during the heaviest days. They just couldn’t keep up. So, like many women, I looked into alternatives and decided to try a menstrual cup. I’d heard so many positive stories, and while I appreciated the idea, the reality for me was… messy.

Still, I gave it a good go, but eventually, I knew it wasn’t quite right for me.

What Worked: Reusable Pads

Next up? Reusable menstrual pads. I can’t remember the brand I initially bought, but they were a total game-changer. These days, I wear them with a super tampon (just in case), double knickers, and those trusty black trousers, and I feel more confident and secure than I have in ages.

If you’re considering switching to more sustainable period products, reusable pads are definitely worth a try. There are some great websites out there to get started with, have a browse and see what suits you best.

Grateful, Even on Heavy Days

Even on my toughest days, I remind myself how fortunate I am to have access to reliable products and choices. So many women and girls around the world don’t have that supposed luxury, and it’s something I try not to take for granted.
