Run your own race…

Yesterday, I ran my second London Landmarks Half marathon (photo is from 2023), raising money for Abigail’s Footsteps. Yet again I thoroughly enjoyed the event, the support from the crowd, seeing the sights of London, and the route entertainment. The biggest reason for my enjoyment I think is that I ran my own race. I had a plan, which was to run for 16 minutes and then walk for 2 minutes, I pretty much stuck to that plan despite what was going on around me or what other people were doing. The only time I deviated away from the plan was for the last couple of miles, where I just kept running, albeit very slowly. This resulted in my time being 15 minutes faster than last year, but my goal, on both occasions was the same; to get around and to enjoy it!

As I was running and trying to take the pain away from my aching hip, I realised that this was also a metaphor for life. It can be easy to get caught up in what other people are doing, but when you focus on YOU, that is usually where the success happens. The true essence lies not in competing against others, but in running YOUR race. Just as everyone has their unique strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations, each runner, yesterday had their path to tread and their own goals to achieve.

Running your own race in life means setting your own pace, undeterred by the speed of others. It’s about staying focused on your goals, regardless of the distractions or obstacles that may arise. In this race, comparison is futile; what matters most is your personal journey and growth. If you are looking for help in setting goals, click here for details of a Wellbeing Consultation.

Embracing your individuality and staying true to yourself is essential. Just as a runner trains diligently to improve their stamina and technique, in life, continuous self-improvement is key. It’s about pushing your limits, stepping out of your comfort zone, and striving for excellence in your endeavours.

Running your own race also entails resilience in the face of setbacks. Every stumble is an opportunity to learn and grow stronger. It’s about picking yourself up, dusting off the setbacks, and persevering with unwavering determination.

Ultimately, running your own race is not about reaching the finish line first, but about the fulfillment derived from the journey itself. It’s about living authentically, pursuing your passions, and embracing the adventure of life with courage and conviction.
