Why getting outside matters

After a few days off, today marked my return to work. Aside from a morning personal training session and an online class, I’ve spent most of the day glued to my laptop, slowly reducing the size of my inbox. And let’s be honest, it’s not great for posture, productivity, or mental well-being.

As women in our 40s and beyond, the pressures of life can easily lead us to neglect our own needs, especially when it comes to movement and self-care. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. I’m a big believer in bite-sized wellness, small, manageable chunks of activity that add up over the day.

This afternoon, I took a short break to step outside. The sun was shining, and a few minutes spent tidying the garden (and pulling a few weeds) did wonders for my headspace. We’re letting parts of our garden grow wild to support local wildlife, and it reminded me how nourishing it can be to simply be outside.

Too often, we overthink exercise, believing it has to be a gym session or a class. But the truth is, consistent movement in everyday life can be just as powerful. A few squats while the kettle boils, extra trips up the stairs, or a quick walk in the fresh air, they all count.

Time is one of the biggest barriers for many women. But if we start viewing movement as something that fits into our day rather than around it, we’re more likely to stick with it. Little moments outside, sprinkled with movement, can support better mood, joint health, hormone balance, and mental clarity.

So, if you’re feeling stiff or stuck, step outside. Breathe, move, reset. Your body (and mind) will thank you.
