Why it’s important to exercise according to your life stage

Website issues meant that there was no blog last week, but everything is back to normal now so what will I be sharing with you this week?

I decided to purchase some body composition scales earlier in the year, not only for personal use but also during assessments with my one-2-one clients. At the time of my first weigh in I knew I was heavier than I wanted to be and that my body fat was higher than I would’ve liked but I was mortified to discover that my metabolic age was 14 years older than my actual age. Older and wiser maybe, but certainly not healthier!

Metabolic age is based on your basal metabolic rate, you may have also seen this as BMR. This is the amount of energy or kilocalories you burn a day to keep your body functioning, before you do any activity, compared with the average in your age group. High intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance training are two forms of exercise you can do to combat the effects of aging on your metabolism.

This highlights the importance of doing the “right” exercise depending what stage of life you are at. I was running regularly but what my body needed was fast, weight-bearing circuits.

Fast forward from February 2019 and I have lost nearly 4% body fat and am 7 years younger, still not at my actual age though, but getting closer!

HIIT circuits are now a regular part of my weekly exercise routine, quite often just using my own body weight and I am definitely feeling better for it.
